In the Life of Cheeks

      IMG_3405

A few weeks ago, Labor Day weekend to be exact, I bought a hamster. She is a Russian Dwarf hamster. Sean appropriately named her Checoslovaquia. Cheeks for short.

       IMG_3414

She lives in my sewing room, so that the cats can’t get to her on a regular basis. I do let her run around the house in her ball most nights. She should be on American Gladiator. She runs into the cats legs when they don’t move out of her way. Occasionally the cats get frisky and paw at the ball (they get popped when they do that). But mostly they just stare at her, having no idea what this intruder is doing in their house.

I had a problem the first few days of having her getting over my fear of being bitten. They are only little hamster teeth, but the are still teeth! Ha! Well, after sticking our bare hands in the cages, and getting rewarded with bites, Sean and I were feeling defeated. I came to a conclusion that a compromise had to be made. I wanted to pick Cheeks up. And Cheeks didn’t want to be picked up. So, now I use her igloo. It’s easy, and she feels safe. Once I get her out of the cage I put her in my hand and she’s fine. Now it’s just a matter of getting used to each other.

Since Cheeks doesn’t get a lot of face time when it come to fashion, I thought I would give her her own post.

She’s super fun. It’s crazy to think that I have yet another small furry creature living in my house as a guest. That always amazes me. I know, I over think things.

I hope you all enjoyed this little break from the regular schedule. I know I sure did. Back to regular stuff tomorrow.

Dress- H&M

Tights- Sears

Shoes- Toms

I wore something almost exactly like this during the summer. I tried to convert this to slightly more of a fall friendly outfit. I pretty much just love this dress. The fact that it can be worn in warm or cold, loose or belted, makes it priceless in a small wardrobe.

My birthday is two weeks away, and all I can do is think about my presents! I know that is horrible, but I’m basically 12 years old. Sean and I just got Mario Party 8 and it’s all we’ve been doing. We’re both 12. It’s great.

Oh My Roots

Outfit Details:

Dress- Tulle

Top- Walmart

No really. Oh my roots! After long debating weather or not to keep my hair dark brown, which I love, I have decided to go the cheaper, less destructive route by going back to my natural color. The problem, I don’t particularly remember what my natural color is! Oh the woes of hair coloring! So I am letting my hair grow to the point where I can just tell a colorist to die the rest the color of my roots. I was never a fan of grown out die jobs. Now with this ombre trend, it may not be too terrible. Unfortunately, I would have the opposite of the desired effect. Soon I will have normal looking hair.

Another great Tulle dress! I sure do love pockets in dresses. I have been making my fair share of skirts lately, but pockets are one thing that I have yet to master. I would love to be able to add them to my own designs.

IMG_3382-2

I have been trying to find a top to go under this dress since I got it a year ago. While walking through Walmart, I glanced a peter pan collar out of the corner of my eye. I got so excited! Just ask Sean. It was kind of ridiculous. Luckily, they had a child’s extra large! My sad chubby arms are a bit too big for the buttoned sleeves, but I’m working on that. In multiple ways.

Of course I wear tights all summer long, and on the first cool day of Fall I go out bare legged! why do I have to dress so weather inappropriate all the time? Silly, silly weather.

Film Friday

Troop Beverly Hills!!!!!

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!

                               Troop-Beverly-Hills-1989

Starring: Shelly Long, Craig T. Nelson, Jenny Lewis, Carla Gugino

Plot: A soon to be divorced Beverly Hills society wife (Phyllis Nefler) is determined to prove to her husband (Freddy) and herself that she can finish what she starts out to do. She soon realizes that being a Wilderness Girls' den mother to a troop of Beverly Hills-bred girls is not as easy as buying cookies.

This movie holds a special place in my heart. And not only because it co-stars the lovely Jenny Lewis. I have been a girl scout all my life, and I grew up in California. Sure, Anaheim is no Beverly Hills, but I still feel a connection. I pretty much love this move. A lot.

Outfit Details:

Shirt- American Apparel

Skirt- Handmade

Shoes- L.e.i.

No post yesterday because I got a little wrapped up in making this here skirt. And due to unexpected troubles with my sewing machine (ahem…. broken needle….) it took a little longer than expected and I ran out of time before I had to go to work.

Out of all my hassle however, came this lovely skirt! It’s light green with white polka dots. That didn’t transfer very well in these pictures, but I will definitely be wearing this bad boy often, and most likely snapping some more photos of it.

IMG_3346-2

I also made a dark blue skirt of the same design. That will make it’s appearance here soon as well.

I tried to balance out the cuteness of this skirt with the boots. I think it’s ok. I’m not super happy with it. At least I know that this skirt will get lots of chances, with lots of incarnations. This is my if Zooey Deschanel played punk rock version. What will happen next time? Only time will tell!

I’ll go outside soon. Really. I’m planning on it. Maybe.

Cardigan- Forever 21

I haven’t worn this skirt in a while. It was my first ever. I still really like it. Even though I made some silly mistakes in constructing it. I made it out of what I believe to be quilting fabric. Something that is going to make it very valuable come the colder months.

It really wasn’t cool out, at all. Quite warm actually. I just really am excited for fall. My bug bites are about heeled. I probably shouldn’t rush back out to take more pictures. But this lovely wood wall is starting to get old. Maybe tomorrow I’ll man up. So to say.

IMG_3325

I had to fix the bow attached to the front. I has sewn it on awkwardly and I just didn’t really know what I was doing. I have since learned my lesson. Now it is just conveniently safety pinned on. On of the mistakes I made was not washing the fabric prior to sewing. When I put the skirt back on after not having worn it in a while, it seemed to have shrunk. Which I blame on my lack of washing. Oh silly me. At least it still fits!

Romper- Dear Creatures via Swirl

Tights- Sears

Like I said, buying online is hardly ever flawless for me. This romper was a lucky purchase. However, it only came in a small or medium. I bought the medium. When it arrived, I was glad that it fit on at all. Let alone as closely as it does. The top fits amazing! Perfect really. But my top is quite a bit smaller than my bottom. :)  I felt like I was in the 70’s, and that all I needed was a pair of roller skates to finish the ensemble.

So, I decided to fix it myself. Because I got it for such a good price, I figured, no harm no fowl. I could figure something out. In comes the extra ‘v’ of fabric on the legs. I feel kind of lucky that I didn’t ruin this thing. It’s just so cute.

If you don’t know anything about Dear Creatures, than you need to find out! Every one of their collections since I started following them have been magical. They have these small details that really make the pieces. They love everything nautical, vintage inspired, and comfy. The silhouettes are slightly loose and fun. More of a modern fit with vintage prints and details. Lots of peter pan collars, frills, and captain collars. If I could wear exclusively Dear Creatures, I probably would.

Sorry for the blur. I’m fidgety.

Film Friday

Yes! Just barely made it in Friday!

Another Halloween treat for ya’ll. A short little film:

Frankenweenie.

                                  frankenweenie-poster-c10277984jpeg

Starring: Daniel Stern, Shelly Duval, Sofia Coppola, and directed by Tim Burton.

Plot: When young Victor's pet dog Sparky (who stars in Victor's home-made monster movies) is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life the only way he knows how. But when the bolt-necked "monster" wreaks havoc and terror in the hearts of Victor's neighbors, he has to convince them (and his parents) that despite his appearance, Sparky's still the good loyal friend he's always been.

This was one of my brothers favorites when he was a kid. I don’t know why, but it took me until my later years to appreciate it for all it is. It’s one of those childhood gems that stays relevant forever. It’s a Disney and Tim Burton film for goodness sakes! It’s in black and white. Which I personally think adds that much more to it. And although I don’t own this one. I take solace in knowing that if I ever get the urge, I can just find it on YouTube (hint: I recommend doing that!)

Outfit Detail:

Blazer- Nick and Mo via Modcloth

Jeans- UO

Top- UO

I have been admiring this Nick and Mo blazer for so long! It’s even on one of my wishlists from a while back. To tell you the truth, I have been admiring many of Nick and Mo’s items for quite some time. They are all so cute and vintage inspired. This blazer even has an adorable lace tag attached by buttons. I realize that I am a little behind on the whole nautical theme, but I still think that it is going to be relevant, at least for myself, well into fall. Especially since I recently bought a Dear Creatures romper from their spring collection. It was featured in the LA section of Swirl by Daily Candy. Along with many other items, including what was known as the Calivintage dress on Modcloth. One that I have been aching for. I was a little behind, though, and it was sold out before I got there. What’s a girl to do?

IMG_3287-2

IMG_3294-2

IMG_3281-2

Sorry I look so upset in that last picture. I think it’s funny. I do try my hardest to look at least upbeat in all of my photos, that’s just not always easy. I feel like I’m at the least neutral while taking the picture, but when I see the final product, I look pissed! Ha! I have to actually smile slightly in order to look anything but angry. Sometimes I forget that, that’s when I look pissed.

Not much else going on with this outfit today. It’s warm out again. And I have three(!!!) bug bites on my back. So I needed a way to cover them up but stay cool. Jeans may have not been the best way to do that, but I only have one pair of shorts that fit me decently, and I wear those all the time, as you all know.

Why do bugs like me so much?!? I’ve pretty much always had this problem. I guess I’m just sweet. :)
