Outfit Details: Jacket, Skirt- Levis; Sweatshirt- found; Shoes, Flannel- thrifted; Hat- gift from my dad

Yesterday was the most amazing thrifting day. These shoes were one of my scores. I have been looking for a pair of boots like these for a while. Vintage ankle boots in 8 1/2 – 9 just don’t come around every day. I was lucky enough to have one of those days when everything I want just happens to fit.

This was my ‘Mountain Grrrlll’ outfit. I have been inspired by these Penfield photos lately. Also by Where’s Waldo apparently.

I also have been watching an unhealthy amount of Twilight Zone. Sean bought the complete series. All five seasons. We’ve been watching almost nothing but TZ for a week now. That, and Predators.

Yesterday I talked about Tegan and Sara. Last night, I decided to cut my hair. This always happens to me when I look at too many pictures of them. This event will most likely happen on Friday. I really am giddy about it. I get like that.

Tegan and Sara- So Jealous.

Identical twin sisters from Canada. They have released six records since 1999 the most recent having come out in 2009. So Jealous, my favorite, was their 4th album, released in 2004.

This record included the songs, “You Wouldn’t Like Me”, “So Jealous”, “I Bet It Stung”, and “Walking With a Ghost” which was later covered by The White Stripes.

I would list my favorite songs from the album, but they are all good. Personally, I don’t think that the other records hold a candle to So Jealous. The song construction on this record shows a big step forward from their previous folk/rock sound. And is the perfect balance before stepping too far to the pop side of things.

Don’t get me wrong, there are  most definitely hits from the other albums. This one is just full of them. Here are a couple.

Enjoy. Bryce!!!

Outfit Details: Sweater, Hat, Socks- Target; Shoes- Vans; Shirt (collar)- Walmart

It has been freezing the last few days! This whole sun and cold thing baffles me. I am not used to it being cold without the sky being totally gray. I guess this is what real fall is like. Who knew?!

Black Friday was a success for me. I hope it was for you as well. I got a pink pong table AND a dress form! Oh you have know idea how excited I am for both of these. And no, I will not be using the table for beer pong… We can’t hang. I’ve said this before. And one on one beer pong is not that fun.

Pictures by Sean! Except for the one of him of course.

This sweatshirt is from target. It is a little boy’s sweatshirt. And it is the softest thing I own. It really is amazing. Eco cotton. I highly recommend them. They even carry youth extra large if you are shy of short tops.

This is pretty much what I wear daily. Even to work if I’m feeling spunky.

I am now counting down the days till I get tired of my hair and hack it all off. I can feel it coming. It always happens this way. Right when I get to the point that I want to be at, I get antsy. Maybe I can hold on. I have been pretty good so far.

Good luck on Cyber Monday everybody! I’m gunna try and score me a new laptop! Wish me luck!

Tulle on Sale

If you have followed my blog for any length of time, you have probably seen me wear a Tulle product. I love the vintage cuts and soft fabrics they are known for. Every piece I have from them fits me in a way that makes them seem custom made. Two years ago, I was lucky enough to pounce on their Black Friday sale, and score quite a few awesome items. This year won’t be any different.

The Black Friday sale at Tulle4us.com will consist of 50% off all items and free shipping. Wowza! But that’s just the beginning.

Black Friday Sale

They are also having a Cyber Monday sale. Cyber Monday is going to be "Oldies, but Goodies" this means 70% on all past season items. Closeout only, no returns accepted. But I promise, you won’t want to!

Oldies, but Goodies Sale

If you miss both of those, don’t fret! Tulle has great products year round.

I would move fast on these sales though, if I were you.

Some of the things I’ve got my eye on?

History Hump #3

In Honor of this glorious holiday that is upon us, I am here to learn you on the tradition of turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. Hopefully we both can learn something useful.

turkey_dinner The first Thanksgiving is said to have occurred in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1621. There is, however, evidence that a Thanksgiving celebration was celebrated even earlier in Canada (1578), and by Spanish explorers in Florida (1565).

"The reason that we have so many myths associated with Thanksgiving is that it is an invented tradition. It doesn't originate in any one event. It is based on the New England puritan Thanksgiving, which is a religious Thanksgiving, and the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England and maybe other ideas like commemorating the pilgrims. All of these have been gathered together and transformed into something different from the original parts." –James W. Baker, Senior Historian at Plimoth Plantation http://www.history.com/topics/thanksgiving-quiz

The history of the use of the turkey is just as clouded. If you follow the idea of the Plymouth first Thanksgiving, then the turkey was used as of the first dinner. This is doubted by many historians though. The wild turkey, you see, was nothing like the domesticated turkey that we know now. The wild turkey of that day was a brightly turkey plumed, cunning bird of flight. And would have been quite difficult to catch. It is said that the meal more likely consisted of deer, clams, and lobster.

“After the first Thanksgiving in 1621, it took over 200 years before Thanksgiving Day was officially proclaimed as a national day of thanksgiving, praise and prayer in 1863.” http://urbanext.illinois.edu/turkey/history.cfm

Basically, the turkey was fresh, affordable, and big enough to feed a crowd. They were also seen as fancy enough to be used for a special occasion, and were being used in British holidays already. Regardless of the origin, 20% of the United States consumption of turkey happens on Thanksgiving. And I can’t argue against it being a lovely tradition, and one that I can’t imagine going a year without. Although, personally, I will be enjoying a lovely Tofurky tomorrow. TofurkyUSRoastGravyfaceHIRES

It seems that history leads us to many an unanswered question. The turkey dinner is no different. It may be that a turkey was used from the very beginning, but that’s unlikely. By the time the holiday was made official in 1863, the use of turkeys was already in full swing. All we know is that it’s not going to change now. Unless of course your more of a ham person…

Outfit Details: Dress- Handmade; Jacket; Forever 21; Hat, Socks- Target; Shoes- Madewell

Enter, Thanksgiving dress. Un-stiched hem and all.

This though, is a sad state of affairs. I will not be able to wear it on Thanksgiving. If I did, I don’t think that I could eat nearly the amount I want to. The pattern I used was based on stretch fabric. I used a linen type fabric, so it’s a bit tight in the bust. I really like it though. I am still undecided on how I want the tulle to flow, so i just let it hang loose. I think that I’m going to try making another one with proper fabric.

I really can’t wait till Thanksgiving! I love food, that’s the main reason here. Sean and I will be spending our first Thanksgiving away from family this year. I’m really excited about it actually. Making all the food, eating as much as we can, then having leftovers for a week! I hope that everyone else is going to have a great holiday too! What are your plans?

Chris Montez- Sunny.

Although Chris Montez had many hits, there is only one that really stands out in my heart. About a year and a half ago, my roommate, who was a big record collector, left some records laying around. The first one we put on was Chris Montez- Time After Time, ‘Sunny’ is the third song.

“Sunny” was originally written in 1963 by Bobby Hebb. There are literally hundreds of versions recorded. Chris Montez’s version is the first I recall hearing, and I fell in love. Sean and I both fell in love. I hope you do too.

Enjoy!

Film Friday

Sorry, I’m late to the party.

Let The Right One In.

images Plot: Oskar, a bullied 12-year old, dreams of revenge. He falls in love with Eli, a peculiar girl. She can't stand the sun or food and to come into a room she needs to be invited. Eli gives Oskar the strength to hit back but when he realizes that Eli needs to drink other people's blood to live he's faced with a choice. How much can love forgive?

Starring: KÃ¥re Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson

This movie is a heart warming thriller/ love story about a young vampire and a younger boy. This one is everything you want it to be and more. If you have any sort of soft spot for vampires, or you just like a great story, you must watch this! It is beautifully shot, with stills that make your mind say this must have been a photo shoot. And makes your heart say yes! The children in this film portray the characters in a way that American cinema would never let them, quietly, and completely accurately. Although I have never read the novel that it is based on, I hardly see any other way for this movie to play out, and am kinda worried about Let Me In.

This Movie has been re-made as an American film titled Let Me In, and is out in theaters now, I believe. I’ve heard it’s damn near exactly the same. Even down to scenes being word for word. I’m still not buying it though. I’ll have to see for myself.

The original movie was based on a book of the same name. “Let the Right One In (original title: LÃ¥t den rätte komma in), also known as Let Me In, is a 2004 vampire fiction novel by Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist. The story centers on the relationship between a 12-year-old boy, Oskar, and a centuries-old vampire child, Eli. It takes place in Blackeberg, a working class suburb of Stockholm, in the early 1980s. The book focuses on the darker side of humanity, dealing with issues such as existential anxiety, bullying, pedophilia and murder.”

You can thank my old roommate for this one. He really did have great taste in movies. So, Thanks! Dan Bush!

Please watch this one! I promise you’ll enjoy it!

I graduated from Savanna High School in Anaheim, Ca. Our mascot was the Rebel. As in the confederate army. we even had a confederate soldier statue in the middle of out quad. I really don’t understand it at all. Our colors were red, silver, and black. I loved them. I transferred to that school my junior year and was stoked to move from light blue and black to to the those. I don’t know. I guess I just didn’t know the glory of blues yet. Anyways, this outfit reminded me of that.

I think that I could wear this black dress every day. Sorta like The Little Black Dress Project. I really don’t think that I could make something that suits me more. It feels so good to know that I at least have one piece of clothing that I feel that way about. It’s filling in some way.

The History Hump #2

Welcome to another week folks! This week will hopefully yield a little more interesting of a story.

Hairstyles through the ages. Specifically, bangs. I have bangs, I love bangs, I love different styles of bangs. Today we are going to take a look through the ages at the various ways bangs were worn.

“Bangs are the swirl on the icing on the cake. When the forehead was revealed, it was reminiscent of authority and the thinking, classical male image or a Queen in a pompadour. One did not find bangs on Queen Victoria, certainly not in her matronly years. The forehead can be harsh and bony, a bit abrupt, aggressive like the ram, and stubborn as the mule. The bangs soften the image; they are a natural for children who have no authority and who are mostly playful. Bangs are fun, cute, demure, in fact, they invite play, much like the pigtails.“

Lets start this off in the 1900’s!

1900a

1904b Bangs were not quite the style in the early 1900’s like they are starting in the 20’s. Big hair and lots of  curls were a true sign of the times. Although a type of bangs can always be seen, with a sort of fall forward or messy front curls acting as bangs.

Skip ahead to the 1920’s!

1925a

1924e

Of course we are all aware of bangs in the 20’s! Especially with the onslaught of flappers, bangs were part of the new ‘it’ hair style. Although bobs came around closer to 1915, the perfection of it seemed to be the roaring 20’s. Along with our first real sighting of the thick blunt bangs that are still so popular today.

1934c  1934a

The 30’s.

With the coming of the next war and the end of prohibition, the freedom and wildness of the 20’s was shut down to fright and insecurity. Movie stars, however, started leaning towards body hugging low cut dresses and tanned skin. They’re hair once again was curled but not the big display it was early on. Along with the sleek dresses, came sleek hair. Pinned tight against the head with body in the curls. Leaving little room for heady bangs.

1948a

1943c

40’s style.

It seems that bangs all but disappeared from popular hairstyles in the 40’s. The slight covering of the forehead only just visible.

bangs001

1956c

On to the 50’s

The 50’s showed a real comeback for bangs in popular style. Teens especially seemed to embrace them as a hairstyle staple.

1964c

1962a

Finally, the 60’s.

By the 60’s, bangs were here with a vengeance! Of all shapes and sizes! And they have yet to leave our sides (or foreheads).

I’ll leave you at the 1960’s since little has changed for the better since then. At least as far as bangs are concerned. Hope you have enjoyed this walk through time with me!
